Bankruptcy Clinic
Atlanta Legal Aid is proud to partner with the United States Bankruptcy Court and Georgia State University College of Law to provide assistance to pro se bankruptcy litigants on a monthly basis. Clients are not represented but involved in or will soon be involved in bankruptcy proceedings pending in federal court. Attorneys and law students are needed to screen and advise clients. Shifts are typically two hours, from 11:30-1:30 on the Monday preceding foreclosure Tuesday (generally the first Tuesday of the month).
Divorce by Publication Project
Many times our clients need to divorce a spouse who cannot be found. Volunteer attorneys can the client obtain a divorce by publication. These matters offer limited-scope, but direct involvement and make a huge impact for the client.
Children's and Disability Rights Advocacy
With opportunities to help an especially vulnerable population, Special Needs Education Advocacy and the Disability Integration Project offer unique volunteer opportunities. In the Special Needs Education Project, volunteers assist children with creation, modification and enforcement of IEP and 504 plans in addition to other education issues. The Disability Integration Project assists clients with disabilities to access community based services to avoid institutionalization. This includes assistance applying for Medicaid waiver programs that provide long-term care supports in the community and assisting children with disabilities in obtain school services.
Consumer Law Project
Low-income consumers receive much needed volunteer assistance with garnishments, credit defense, Fair Debt Collections Practice Act issues, debt assignment, used car cases, medical debt and consumer bankruptcy.
Enhanced Services Project
This specialized project trains volunteers to follow up with clients to ensure they have been able to follow through with our advice in limited matters such as applications for benefits and estate planning.
Estate Planning Project
The Estate Planning Project partners with attorneys across Atlanta to provide low-income clients with estate planning documents, including a Last Will & Testament, Financial Power of Attorney and Advance Directive for Healthcare.
Guardianship Project
Helping clients by stabilizing family relationships and access to continuity of care, our guardianship projects are inspiring. In the Special Needs Adult Guardianship Project, volunteers ensure the caretaker's ability to apply for benefits, oversee the ward's medical care, and provide continuity of care for the ward, by helping caretakers establish guardianship over young adults with severe special needs.
Housing Preservation Project
Housing is one of the biggest and most basic of client needs. Volunteers in this project take on landlord/tenant cases, evictions, homeowner's association cases, contracts and offer limited assistance through housing clinics.
Name Change Project
In this one-of-a-kind project, volunteers represent eligible clients with gender-affirming name changes, birth certificate amendments, and gender marker changes.
Grace UMC Women's Action Ministries Legal Clinic
Volunteers in this project assist women in need at the Grace United Methodist Church. Clients will meet with a volunteer to complete a legal needs assessment check up for follow up by Atlanta Legal Aid on a variety of legal topics. Volunteers do not need expertise in any area to complete the intake/legal check up. In addition, clients are able to raise their housing, estate planning (advance directive or power of attorney), consumer law, or family law matter with an attorney for a 30 minute free legal consultation. We need both experts in subject matters and general volunteers for intake. Check our calendar for upcoming clinic dates
